With Scrivener, the style you choose to work in is entirely independent of the style you publish in. I find this much easier to work in, but your preferences are likely very different. Note that I do not include the chapter title in the body of the text. You may prefer to spell them out as “Chapter One,” or give them more description titles, like “Ghost at the Palace Theater.” Like I mentioned earlier, I’m keeping this example simple. You can see that I start out with the Prologue, and the titles for subsequent chapters are simply numbers. The chapter titles are the labels on the text files. There is a way to organize chapter scenes into their own text elements inside a chapter folder, but I’ll save that for a later part in this series. Scenes within each chapter are separated by a blank paragraph. The format I’m using for this tutorial is the simplest variation: each chapter is a single text element. I’m also going to assume for this first example that you have a simple Novel Format. You have tens of thousands of words in dozens of chapters. So, let’s assume you have your book written. Although Scrivener can get you halfway there, there are some elements of your final printed version that you’ll need to finish outside of the program. However, there are a few caveats to be aware of. The ability to generate a variety of outputs from your source material is valuable. Regardless, if you find Scrivener challenging to use, I encourage you to stick with it.

The Mac edition is on version 3 and an upgrade is promised for Windows users “soon,” with refinements to the user interface I’m looking forward to. I’m writing this article with Scriver version 1.9.16.0 for Windows and Linux. There are so many options and features that it can be daunting to get started, and you may find yourself reluctant to try new ones. If you’re not an outliner, you can skip that step and just start creating text. It supports myriad ways to work and write and create (it even supports screenplays). That said, I will point out that Scrivener’s strength is also its weakness.

I’m not going to get into the details of how to use Scrivener to write in this article, I mostly want to explain how to take what you’ve written and create files that you can use to widely distribute your book through Amazon’s Kindle Desktop Publishing. There’s also a more traditional outline mode as well, but I like being able to rearrange scenes with the virtual note cards. One of the things I like is that I can outline my novel using the corkboard mode. Scrivener keeps everything separate, but organized in a binder, just like you might have done before the age of the word processor. And when you’re ready to write, you just start writing. Then you can start plotting out your novel using an outline or notecard view. It allows you to assemble the elements of your book: characters, places and research into a project file.
